Technical Studies, AAS

Program Description/Purpose: The Technical Studies Associate in Applied Science Degree is designed to provide a broad foundation of general education and technological knowledge, along with a concentration in a technical field as identified by local industry needs, that will prepare the graduate to enter or advance in technical fields upon graduation.

Additional Information: The Technical Studies Degree will use one or more existing certificates or career studies certificates with additional courses to create a coherent plan of study for a total of 60 - 69 credits.  Experiential credit, such as credit for prior learning, internship credit, directed study for credit, and/or apprenticeship credit may be used.  The Chief Academic Officer or designee will approve the Technical Studies Degree to ensure a coherent plan of study.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate technical information in written, oral, and media formats.
  2. Collaborate effectively in teams to improve productivity and ensure the quality of product or process outcomes.
  3. Explain how the field’s key principles shape the application of technical knowledge within the industry or career field.
  4. Apply career-specific technical knowledge to problem-solve and resolve challenges and issues in practice.
  5. Use appropriate safety measures within the field.

Transfer Information: This program is not intended for transfer. Students desiring to transfer should consult their academic advisors and their intended transfer institutions for specific direction in program and course selection.

Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.

General Education


(15 credits required; at least 3 credits from each discipline)

  • Communications: 3 - 6 credits
  • Humanities: 3 - 6 credits
  • Social/Behavioral Sciences: 3 - 6 credits
  • Mathematics/Natural Science: 3-6 credits

One (1) or Two (2) existing certificates/career studies certificates with additional courses to create a coherent plan of study.  May include experiential credit, such as credit for prior learning, internship credit, independent study, and/or apprenticeship credit.       (44 - 52 credits)

Minimum Credit Hours for Degree: 60-69 Credits
