Education Degree, AS

Program Description/Purpose: The education degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete their education in preparation for teacher licensure and employment as a teacher in a public or private school setting.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will identify and explain the criteria required for teacher licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  2. Students will analyze learning environments, instruction, and assessments for cultural responsiveness and inclusivity.
  3. Students will analyze the influence of key events in U.S. educational history and educational court cases which have helped define and regulate the educational system.
  4. Students will explain the role and fiscal responsibilities of the federal, state, and local governments in education.
  5. Students will describe the special education referral process, the individuals involved, and their roles.
  6. Students will demonstrate the ability to design differentiated lesson plans for learners with diverse skills and needs. 

  • Below is the recommended course sequence for full-time students.
  • Courses are listed by the semester they are usually offered.
  • Course availability in a given semester may vary.
  • You can change the order or number of classes each semester, but taking fewer classes in a semester will mean more semesters to finish the program.
  • Please discuss your plan including elective selection with your advisor to ensure it meets your academic goals.
  • Students who complete this degree will also complete and be awarded the Uniform Certificate of General Studies.  

Spring Semester


Program Total: 60-63 Credits


1 This course requires a 20-hour-minimum practicum experience in a local public school. The student may be required to pay for a background check, TB screening, fingerprinting, and/or drug screening.

ENG 250  is preferred for Elementary Education endorsement.

Course is a VA Department of Education required licensure course

It is highly recommended that students consult with their academic advisor to select the most appropriate course for their curriculum and/or transferability to another college.
