Social Sciences Degree, AS (882)

Program Description: The AS Social Sciences degree creates the foundation for a Bachelor of Science degree in majors like administration of justice, communications, history, economics, political science, pre-law, psychology, and sociology. The Social Sciences program is designed to provide transfer paths that will match the general education requirements of four-year colleges and universities; however, institutions often differ in their requirements, so students are strongly encouraged to work with their academic advisor and to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which they plan to transfer.

Students should understand that the line between the humanities and social sciences is not always clear and that some colleges and universities award BA degrees in what are usually considered the social sciences. Each student admitted to the program is assigned an academic advisor to help plan the appropriate course of studies to transfer to the student’s choice of a four-year college or university. Students who complete the program generally transfer as juniors.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will gather, evaluate, interpret, and integrate information to reach well-reasoned and well-informed conclusions or solutions.
  2. Students will demonstrate the knowledge and civic values necessary to become informed and contributing participants in a democratic society.
  3. Students will develop, convey, and exchange ideas, orally and in writing, as appropriate to a given context and audience.
  4. Students will recognize and know how to apply social science research methods to evaluate empirical information.
  5. Students will access, interpret, and communicate social science data.
  6. Students will use technology to conduct social science research.

  • Please discuss your plan including elective selection with your advisor to ensure it meets your academic goals.
  • Students who complete this degree will also complete and be awarded the Uniform Certificate of General Studies .
