Science Degree, AS - Mathematics Major (880-09)

Program Description: The math degree is designed for individuals who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree. This curriculum is designed to prepare students to major in one of the following fields: mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, operations research, applied mathematics, or computer science. 

Many potential career opportunities exist for Mathematics majors, including careers in actuarial sciences, aerospace, business, economics and finance, engineering, insurance, medical sciences, education, computer science and the physical sciences.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply quantitative skills to synthesize, analyze and evaluate mathematical equations.
  2. Students will be able to read and construct mathematical arguments and proofs.
  3. Students will recognize and use appropriate methods to identify, formulate and analyze real-world problems with quantitative and statistical reasoning or mathematical techniques.
  4. Students will be able to utilize technological and computer skills appropriately as an effective tool in investigating, analyzing and solving problems.
  5. Students demonstrate the skills required to clearly communicate mathematical ideas in appropriate contexts visually, orally and in writing to a range of audiences.

  • Students who complete this degree will also complete and be awarded the Uniform Certificate of General Studies .

1 Students who have not met the requirements for enrollment into MTH 245  or MTH 263  will need to complete the prerequisite for those courses.  It is recommended that students complete MTH 167  to fulfill both prerequisite requirements if needed.

It is highly recommended that students consult with their academic advisor to select the most appropriate course for their curriculum and/or transferability to another college.
