Program Description/Purpose: The Career Studies Certificate in Computer Science prepares students with the core knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position in the career field of computer science (CS). This certificate is appropriate for students currently holding a degree in another field or seeking to enter into the CS field prior to achieving a full degree. Depending on the electives taken a graduate may be able to be hired as a junior programmer, entry-level computer and/or data scientist, or systems support specialist. All courses feed into the A.S. in Science: Computer Science Specialization. Courses transfer under TransferVA approvals.
Occupational Outcomes: Entry-level employment in the field of computer science, such as a junior developer, entry-level computer and/or data scientist, or systems support specialist.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will apply fundamental principles and methods of Computer Science to a wide range of applications.
- Students will effectively communicate both orally and in writing with subject-area experts in business/industry to understand their processes and to help formulate computer-based solutions.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of the software design process and a basic understanding of programming language syntax.
Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.

2 Any remaining CSC courses listed within the catalog will meet this requirement. If transferring for a bachelor’s degree, a MTH course may be taken at a level of MTH 161 or above.
