Health Information Management, AAS

Program Description/Purpose: Through didactic instruction, simulated experiences, and internship placements, graduates of Laurel Ridge Community College’s Health Information Management degree will have a working knowledge of healthcare data content, data structure and standards, information protection, including access, disclosure, archiving, privacy and security, technologies used to capture, store, and report health information, revenue management including diagnostic and procedural coding, compliance (with state and federal regulations and common accreditation standards), and leadership concepts. Graduates will have sufficient knowledge of the electronic storage, retrieval, and use of health information to ensure the efficient and effective flow of health information throughout the continuum of care, to support reimbursement, and use in health research.   In addition, they will be able to effectively communicate, in writing and verbally, information related to the research, planning, provision, and evaluation of everyday operations in all aspects of health care services.  Students gain skills that will allow them to effectively manage the operations, workflow, and staff of health information and related departments. This program is beneficial to individuals who are seeking career advancement and eligibility to take the national certifying examination - Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and/or a certified coding credential. 

Occupational Outcomes: Entry-level positions include Health Information (Medical Records) Assistant/Technician, Medical Coder, quality  Coding Manager/Supervisor, Health Information Supervisor/Office Manager, Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist, Privacy Officer/Assistant, Health Data Analyst, Cancer or Trauma Registrar,  Healthcare Data Analyst, Data Quality Manager, or Department/Office Supervisor.

Accreditation: The Health Information Management (HIM) associate degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).  For additional information about accreditation as well as program outcomes, please go to https://www.cahiim.org/.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate technical skills and knowledge related to basic record-keeping and administrative (non-clinical) principles. 
  2. Students will demonstrate accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding and sequencing required for successful employment in the field of health information management in hospitals or other healthcare-related employers.  
  3. Students will recognize and exhibit positive interpersonal skills required in the office environments of healthcare facilities. 
  4. Students will pass the national accreditation examination of AHIMA to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) at the conclusion of their HIM education program.

Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.

Program Curriculum


Program Total: 64 Credits


1 BIO 141 /BIO 142  Human Anatomy and Physiology I/II may be substituted for BIO 145 .
2 Course MUST be taken in the first semester. May also take SDV 100 .
3 Prerequisite: ITE 152  is strongly recommended before HIM 130 .
4 Prerequisite: Instructor permission required; all HIM core courses must be successfully completed with a grade of “C” or better prior to coordinated internship. Most sites require a criminal background check, flu-shot, and proof of immunizations. All associated fees are the responsibility of the student.
