Program Description/Purpose: This certificate prepares students to fill medical billing and coding positions, such as medical billing assistant, medical coder, or medical insurance specialist. Provides fundamental knowledge and skills associated with insurance billing and coding. The curriculum includes courses in college composition, medical coding, and reimbursement, and medical office booking and insurance.
Occupational Outcomes: Medical Coder, Medical Biller, Medical Coding Specialist, Medical Billing Specialist, and Medical Charge Entry Specialist.
Accreditation Status: The Laurel Ridge Community College’s Medical Billing and Coding certificate program is approved by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). Upon completion of this program, students may sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam (given at the college for an additional fee), a national accrediting exam sponsored by the AAPC.
Admission Requirements
This program requires students to enter with the following requisite skills:
- Demonstrated minimum keyboarding skill of 40 wpm.
- Prior to student internships or student employment, satisfactory completion of criminal background check and drug screen may be required (varies by employer).
Program Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate the ability to apply ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to apply CPT procedure codes.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to process a medical claim from the time a patient makes an appointment until the claim is paid.
Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.
