General Studies - Recreation and Outdoor Leadership Specialization, AA&S

Program Description/Purpose: Allows students the flexibility of moving into transfer programs in leisure science, wellness, and health promotion, parks and outdoor recreation, forestry or camp management, sport management/marketing/coaching, hospitality and travel, tourism, and events management, non-profit leadership, therapeutic recreation, and similar fields of study.

Occupational Outcomes: Prepares students for leadership and management positions in sports, recreation, tourism, non-profit, and therapeutic recreation.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will recall knowledge related to the history, leadership, programming, and outdoor skills involved in pursuing a career in the recreation industry.
  2. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills and use recreation professionalism standards during each of their two 32-hour practicum experiences. 
  3. Students will recall knowledge related to the history, leadership, programming, and outdoor skills involved in preparing for a career in the recreation industry.

Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.

Program Curriculum


Program Total: 61 Credits


1 For students taking more than one history course, it is strongly recommended that you begin the sequence by taking HIS 111  or HIS 121  prior to HIS 112  or HIS 122 .
PSY 200 , PSY 215  and PSY 230  may be needed for those entering Therapeutic Recreation.
BIO 141 /BIO 142  may be needed for Therapeutic Recreation. Check with your transfer institution. A one-year sequence of biology, chemistry, geology or physics is recommended; however, depending on the requirements of four-year institutions, two one-semester courses in different sciences may be substituted with advisor approval.
