General Studies - Human Services Specialization, AA&S

Program Description/Purpose: With a focus on the helping professions, the Human Services specialization offers students the background knowledge and flexibility to transfer into Bachelor programs focusing on psychology, social work, human services, sociology, counseling, and education. Additionally, the Human Services specialization provides students interested in helping careers, and those currently working within a helping organization, opportunities to enhance their qualifactions and skills, specific to personal, social, and cultural development.

Occupational Outcomes: Occupational titles, depending on educational achievement, of human service workers may include Case Worker, Case Management Aide, Eligibility Counselor, Social Service Aide, Probation Officer, Mental Health Counselor or Crisis Intervention Manager.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will appraise the way social environments promote or inhibit personal and professional growth.
  2. Students will practice empathic listening skills and engaging mock clients in a meaningful way.
  3. Students will practice empathic listening skills and engaging mock clients in a meaningful way.
  4. Students will use active listening skills, appropriate to client needs, within a human services organization or when engaging in a human services capacity.
  5. Students will determine the relevance of professional communication with marginalized or minoritized groups within a human services organization or engaging in a human services capacity.

Courses are displayed under the semester in which they are regularly offered and are recommended to be taken in this sequence to ensure timely graduation. It is possible that a course shown in a particular semester may not be offered due to low enrollment or other factors.

Program Curriculum


Program Total: 60 Credits


Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in human services areas like psychology, social work and counseling may need a statistics course (MTH 245 ) for transfer.
2 Recommended Social Science electives include SOC 200  or PSY 200 .
